Quar Bash!

Hi there, I got a question for you:

What do you call a post that has SOME painted Quar and SOME Quar gaming and argues that Quar gaming is cool?

A Quarrelsome Post.

....

Yeah, I know it wasn't funny.  But in the strongest tradition of Dad Jokes, it doesn't need to be funny.

Some Painted Quar

To make it up to you I now present a SmorgasQuar of painted miniatures.  Or should that be a Quargasbord?  Either way, that joke is wearing thin and still not funny.

First up we have a Quar civilian: the mechanic.
Proving that even in the Quar world; all overalls are blue.

With him are 2 pygmy elephant looking creature things.
Those are for the eventual farm that I shall be doing.

Next up we have some Crusader Trench Raiders.

These guys have special rules that make them especially good at being sneaky and clobbering the enemy at close range.

For too long the enemy has felt safe in his trenches.
Knowing full well that the raiders were not present.
The enemy has grown slow and complacent.
Now is the time to strike.

As ever I'm showing close ups of the miniatures so that you can actually see them, not because the painting is any good.

Not to be outdone, Next up is a pair of Royalist Trench Raiders.

Which are cooler than the crusader ones because these guys
have an awesome metal mask.

Because a metal mask is totally a sensible thing to wear while sneaking around in the dark...

And speaking of sensible head gear, my latest faction joins the ranks of the painted.  These are the Rhyflers that hail from the land of Gwynt.

And as you can see these dudes are all wearing Bicorn Hats.
Which is Hi-lar-rious.

closer view.

The guy on the right is supposed to be smoking a pipe.

Anyway, these are Scattergunners.
What's a Scattergun?  Exactly as it sounds.

And the Leadership of the patrol.
Guy with sword and guy pointing finger.
Standard really.

And that rounds out the latest painted Quar.  Into the storage box they go...

All Quar painted to date.
The box is getting kinda full.

But then take them out of the storage box because it was gaming time!

Some Quar Gaming

Last Saturday, ...which turns out would be a great day to avoid the watching the news, avoiding military parades, and protests of all kinds... I had some folks over to play my new favorite game.

Game in progress!

Once again I annexed my children's playroom for my own uses.  I told them it was my turn to play my games with my friends and if they didn't like it then tough!  It was Father's Day Weekend and today would be for me, while tomorrow would also be for me.

The game would be a 3x3 using my stunning (if I doi say so myself) trench terrain table, because with some many players it seemed to be a crime to not use it.

Ain't she a pretty table?

Overall Wearin' Dude and a buddy watch on...

We did a meeting engagement where both sides were attempting to reclaim the giant trench.  You won the scenario by getting your dudes over to the opposite side.

I was busy playing and teaching and hosting and eating pizza that no real AAR is possible, not that you would read it anyway.  So, enjoy some pretty pictures with minimal context:

My dudes (in the middle) getting over the trench and pushing into the enemy.

One player brought a little howitzer to the field.

It was maybe one of the best games of my whole life.

Convincing

My fiend Mr PC came to game.  He's not big on the look of Quar.  They just look odd to him.  And he keeps calling them penguins when they are clearly anteaters.  (Actually, they do look like penguins, but I'll never admit it).

But he's not a barbarian, and he can appreciate a nice-looking terrain and painted miniatures.  Plus, last time I played what he wanted so now it was MY TURN.

But at the end he said that he liked the rules a lot, that the rules had a lot of tactical nuances, and with minimal effort could be used to play all manner of serious sci-fy games.  He then sent me this short video...

And it wasn't so Quarrelsome after all.

Thanks for reading.
Double Thanks for writing a comment.
Till next time.

  1. The anteaters farm miniature elephants with Ankylosaurus-like armour on their backs. This gets more and more weird by the post, but the figs look wonderful—I'll hear no talk (writing) about your painting not being fabulous, okay?!—particularly on your sensational and colourful terrain.
Your signage works not only to control the kids but also to let the players know what they are here for. It's good to be the one who tells people what to do in an authoritarian regime.
Good that your mate has the same sense of humour as you, but what else would I expect?
Entertaining, colourful and fun as ever Stew.
    Best wishes, James

    1. Thanks James. I maintain that the painting is merely average as I know what good painting looks like; and this is not it. 😀
But I admit that everything together works really well.
Like most authoritative leaders, I’m only a figurehead. Hiding the ones that have the true power.

  2. Looks like a Saturday well spent, Stew! Very nice work across the board on all factions.

  3. Awesome figures Stew.
The battle looks like it was lots of fun and I hope the right Quar won.
I am glad you have converted Mr PC to a least the rules of the game. From your previous descriptions they do seem to be rules that would be easily adaptable to multiple periods.
And happy Fathers Day. (ours is not until September) I hope you got lots of goodies.

    1. PS that video is very silly.... but finally someone has found a use for AI.

    2. Thanks Ben. Yes the right Quar won but it was close. Yes, if you strip away the world stuff the rules are a very tactical 20th century skirmish game. 😀

Yeah, the video is AI and was scary how fast he put it together.

  5. Civilian Quar … what a great idea, obvious now they are mentioned, but a great addition to the Quar narrative. Agree, the game table is very nice.

    1. Thanks Norm. There are very few civilians for Quar as of yet.
Glad you like the game table.
Turn on comments to your blog already. 😀

    2. well, it's a nice charity you got going where you write comments for all of us but don't get any yourself. 😁

  6. Lovely new additions and a game as well. I do like the look of the Gwynt and their bicornes. A faction I may do in the future

  7. Great work on all the new additions Stewart, certainly add a lot of character to your collection. The game looks a lot of fun, and a good use of your time on that day I would say, I think you've got as many people as they had at the parade ! LOL

Yes, I thought it was a day well spent though part of me wondered if the world was erupting while we rolled dice. 😀

  8. What a silly post. I love all of it, even the dad jokes.

New Quar are pretty cool. Especially those bicorn fellows.

Now there's mention of these things looking like penguins, I can't unsee it. Were I to own any, they'd be painted up appropriately and squawking noises would happen.

Of course you like the dad jokes, you’re one of us!
Yes, the penguins is impossible to unsee. Thanks Mr PC, but no thanks.

  9. Great way to spend Father's Day and avoid the "Real"???? World! The Quar are still weird, whether anteaters or penguins, but the table looks great and your painting is very nice...in an average sort of way...I should know, mine is the same!

  10. Lovely game that I am so very disappointed to have missed.

The new quar look pretty good too, and what is more reactionary than wearing bicornes into a trench battle?

  11. Great to see the terrain boards out for another run. I never get tired of looking at them. Some lovely additions to the Quar forces too, Stew. I especially like the little green elephant-type figures.

  12. Well it looks like you had fun which is the main thing and the terrain table is lovely. Sadly the quar thingies don’t do it for me but everyone to their own 🙂

  13. You seem to be the victim of a Quar invasion, have you considered Quar-antining? (I'm with you on the dad jokes, except for the not being funny part ;). I like the Quars, but that table is next level. Awesome stuff.

    1. Thanks Merjin. I appreciate the comment and you liking the table. And the dad jokes. Especially the dad jokes. 😀

  15. After painting up those fellows with the bicornes, you've now got one foot in Napoleonics--a slippery slope, my friend, beware!

    1. Thanks Ed. Oh no, I had best be careful and I don’t want to stumble into another genre. Especially one as boring and confusing as Naps! 😝😀

  16. I've got no Quar-rels with this post! I'm glad you got a game in and the terrain and pictures came out beautifully as usual. I would have to agree with you on the whole ducking world events to do some wargaming. Everything is crazy at the moment. What better place than a child's playroom to do it in too? That brought a smile to my face as its hardly the usual backdrop for some serious wargaming! :)

  17. Lovely looking game Stew. If you ever have a Quar Civil War game, you could create unit of Quartrill's Raiders and you would have to decide which CW was the best CW

    2. Another Quar-tally post from Stew about fantasy pengu......anteaters (why don't they farm ants?). Why do they all sound like characters from the Welsh programme Pobol Y Cwm?
If they get sick do they go into Quar-ant-ine?
Do your other rooms have instructions in big letters - "EAT" in the dining room and "SLEEP" in the bedroom? So many questions - so few answers!☺

    3. Thanks Neil. Quar’s are supposed to sound Welsh.
The words on the wall are more like a label or suggestion. Not always obeyed. If so, I’d put “stay in bed and be quiet “ in the children’s rooms and “sexy time bc the kids are in bed and quiet” in mine.

  18. Great game there Stew and loved the whole post, with it once again forcing me to ponder getting a small 15mm force to go up against my 10mm chaps:)! They do like like Penguins, so I can't get this out of my head now;). Oh and the Youtube short made me laugh!!!
