039/100

Why are they called the Dark Ages?

Because there were so many Knights!

LOLOLs, you know you can't touch this.

It's for Ages with the Dark Ages

That joke would work better if I had some Norman cavalry to display but alas; I am not that cool.
What I do have is more Dark Ages infantry types as I continue my goal to paint 100 of these mean little men.  In the largest batch to date I painted 16 of them; all with bristle beards or macho mustaches, strong spears and swift swords, and dainty delicate daisies on their underwear.
Bringing the total of painted miniatures to 39 out of 100.

Here they are; Heroes just for one day.  A mix of Saxons and Vikings.

Here are a few close ups of a few Saxons, so you can see the absolutely GORGEOUS display of my average painting.

(I think the Bayeux Tapestry memes are funny)

And some Vikings made it into the mix this time.
What the difference between a Generic Viking dark age warrior miniature and a Generic Saxon dark age warrior miniature?  Mostly the smell.  Saxons smell like cinnamon and Vikings smell like suntan lotion.  I duuno why.
Actually not much.  I try to give Saxons a cross on their shield somewhere and heads with mustaches while the Vikings get more blonde hair in braids and shields that have...ah... anything that's not a cross.

Those were some thrilling pictures of miniatures are they not?

I'll stop with the memes soon.  Proommiissse.

My Turn!

A lot of miniature wargaming blogs that I follow will occasionally post pics of their adventures away from the wargaming table; like pretty landscapes and wildlife.  I nod along appreciatively but I'm well documented for being an inside person.  I like being inside.  Outside is lame and filled with terrible things like bright sunlight and people walking their dogs (the horror).

But my wife likes the outside and I like my wife, and moreover I like what she does for me after we go outside if you know what I mean....
(she let's me play miniature wargames inside while she takes the kids outside; what were you thinking of?)

For Valentines Day I gave my wife a weekend trip to one of here favorite spots; Muir Woods.  We went last weekend.  Muir Woods is a tourist trap on the West Coast in the San Francisco Bay Area and is basically a National Park that is full of really OLD, really BIG, really TALL Ca. Redwoods trees.

We dropped off  Daughter #1 and Son #2 at their grandparents house for the weekend but took Son #3 (barely over a year old) with us to the forest ,because the grandparents (my inlaws) can't watch all 3 of the surviving children at once; especially since Son #3 still needs diaper changes and like to CLIMB on everything.  Bless their hearts they'll tell you they can watch all 3 of them but I know better.  I'm 30 years younger than they are and I can just barely watch all 3 of them.

I won't barrage you with pics because it's mostly just, you know, trees.  Muir Woods has 1 main trail loop that is wide and flat and suitable for strollers and such, and a couple other trails branching  off that are more rugged.  Most of the trees there are hundreds of years old and some are even over a thousand years old.

Told you he climbs on everything

I hiked around 4 miles with 20 odd pounds of toddler strapped to my chest.
Guess I can't be that old and out of shape.

Us inside the trunk of giant tree

Bye

And now it's time for me to make like a tree.....and leave.  But before I go:

Last Bayeux Tapestry meme.

Thanks for reading.
Double Thanks for writing a comment.
Till next time.

  1. I think that's great painting (that I should have looked at in person!)

Muir woods seems nice, somehow I have never been there, despite visiting basically all the other redwood parks at one time or another.

    1. Thanks David! I should of brought some out for the ohhing and swing but we were excited to do spaceships. 😀

If you have a chance; Muir Woods is pretty cool and a nice day can be spent there.

  2. Very nice Dark Ages warriors of both denominations Stew. When I was young, it was easy to tell Vikings...they were the ones with horns in their helmets. Unfortunately, historians came along and pointed out that was BS, and now they just look like everyone else....THANKS, historians! Great walk...well done you for getting outside in the sun! We seem to have quite a few saquioa/ Redwoods here in NZ for some reason...people obviously thought they were cool and imported them. Of course, as our country isn't even two hundred years old (in its current post Colonial non PC state) the trees aren't very old yet....no highways through the middle of them etc.....can you imagine the fuss if you suggested doing that to a ten thousand year old tree today?! Your wife looks happy...which is always a great result!

    1. Thanks Kieth. Yeah no more horns on helmets; more the pity. 😀

I had a nice time at Muir Woods despite being outside. The wife loved it and that always earns the bucco hubby points.

  3. Another good one, Stew! Your figure count is starting to worry me. I had you down for 100 figures by October. I may have under-estimated your abilities. I enjoyed a look at your local flora. You should get out more!

"Bayou Tapestry"? Was this found in the French Quarter of New Orleans?

    1. Thanks Jonathan. I underestimated myself as well. Though it’s still March and I’m not halfway done yet.

I got my allotted time being outside for the next 6 months now. 😀

    2. Ooooohhhh. Bayou. I see how I messed up. I’d blame spell check but I did it twice so I’m just bad at French. 😀

      I’ll fix that.

  4. More cool looking Dark Ages fellows - 39 already as well! As Jon mentioned, some of your blog followers predicted completion dates might be well off if you continue at such a pace.

(Are you sure though Vikings would smell of lotion and not seal fat to ward off the effects of the wind and salt air? Not nearly as fragrant as a lifeguard I imagine.)

Nice to see the three of you out and about and that you earned points with the missus. Muir Woods is indeed pretty, but every time I've been it's been far too full of annoying tourists. I too prefer indoors far more, though I love dogs. Sadly my wife loves the outdoors as long as it's not too strenuous an affair as she hates exercise somehow.

O and your lad is simply adorable. Obvious that the milkman had a hand in his creation and not you.

    2. In Dai’s defense he hasn’t seen me in person in a long time and has probably forgotten how devastatingly cute I am.

    3. Thanks Dai. I am setting a nice pace with the miniatures so far; let’s hope I can keep it up though there is no real deadline other than I want it done. 😀

We count as tourists for Muir Woods as we had to travel. The main path is indeed full of people but the outer more rugged trails were more deserted. Now I can safely stay inside for the rest of the year.
At least with a canopy of trees I didn’t need to worry about suntan lotion. 😀

  5. Good looking figures Stew keep going the more dark age figures the better in my view, I will check out those memes. muir woods brings back some nice memories as we visited some time back on a family holiday, although I think my daughter complained most of the time 🤔

    1. Thanks Matt. That’s the other reason we didn’t bring the two older kids; to cut down on the complaining. 😀

  6. Right said Eric the Red! The figs really look good. I can see why the Muir Woods would be a favorite, even if the family got treed there (sorry, couldn't help it).Seriously, your report reminds me that we can easily take such special places for granted.

    1. Thanks Ed. It’s a special place for sure and my wife’s favorite spot so it was a good gift to go. 😀

  7. Great stuff Stew! Well on your way to the halfway point of the goal and it's not even Spring yet. Always good to get out and enjoy a day with the family, judging by the photos you all looked to have had a great day 😀

    1. Thanks Ivor. Just in time for spring. It was a good day out with 3/5 of the family and while a nice setting I wouldn’t want to do it every day. …. Lol. 😀

  8. Another great post Stew! The Saxons/Vikings look great and after all, during the Danegeld they fought together on the same side anyway, right?
Muir looks beautiful BTW. I visited the redwoods once back in 1972 and felt like an awestruck Hobbit. You should have taken some Saxons with you to photograph up close with the trees in the background in forced perspective, that would look cool.

    1. Thanks Vol. Bringing some soldiers along on our romantic weekend is probably not the best idea. As part of the idea is to give her some time so that I can have some time for little soldiers later.

An awe struck Hobbit or an Ewok is a good image and appropriate. 😀

    2. Haha, well in 1972 no one had ever heard of an Ewok so that never entered my mind. I think now I would be looking for signs of speeder debris and trooper splatter!

    3. In 1972 no one had even heard of me (bc I wasn’t even born yet🙃🙃).

  9. Great work on your Saxons Stewart, the shields still look very impressive, and if you hadn't mentioned that you use transfers you couldn't tell.
Very cool scenic pictures, and of your family enjoying the time there together. Was looking closely but couldn't spot any scout troopers on speeder bikes ! LOL

    1. Thanks Dave. Yeah I didn’t see any troopers or Ewoks either but neither would of been out of place. 😀

  10. Great post Stew and consider all your Dark Ages puns and images pilfered forthwith. Great yo see the added forest hike images. Such wonderful greenery which we in Western Australia, through the hottest summer I can remember, would just love yo roll around in…similar to your youngest son in fact. Looking good and keep up the hiking.

    1. Thanks Carlo. I didn’t generate any of those memes but stole them from google. So it’s only right that you pilfer them too. 😀

There is little to no chance of me doing more hiking unless the wife really really wants to go. My legs and back are still sore and I got way too much fresh air.

  12. The new minis look great to me and 16 in a batch deserves some kind of award as far as I'm concerned! Its a shame we didn't get to see the daisy patterns on their undies though... I went as a kid to see Redwoods in the very Northern part of California (I think Muir Woods is something else and I'm too lazy to Google it and be sure) and it was cool. I'd like to go back and see them again if I have the chance. Kudos to you for sharing your personal adventures too. I can't talk myself into doing it even though I bet people wouldn't find it as boring as I think they would. If that makes any sense! :)

    1. Thanks Jeff. 16 was a lot to paint at once and was probably pushing it.
As for adventures; I don’t have that many really and don’t share them all the time. It was more because some of my other best blogging have been posting landscape pictures and now I happened to have some worth sharing.

I also like it when blogs share some personal stuff from time to time kinda like human interest stories. Just to show that we are all people. Not all the time mind, but some fun stuff now and then. 😀😀

  13. Your practically steaming through your dark age figures and they look good too! I don't really differentiate between Saxons and any Vikings that I've done although I did do all my pagan Saxons with blue and white shields, historically incorrect but I don't care! Trees and toddler looks good, glad to hear you're in your better halfs good books, always a good place to be!
